Hello all! It's me, your friendly neighborhood Shady XD well again, I'm regretting signing up for the Advanced Technical Writing class over the summer, but now I need your help! I have a few questions to ask in this survey that will help me to plan and write the safety manual that is my final project. I'm supposed to be doing interviews, but I want to get info from as many sources as possible so I'm crossposting this on my main sites.
Just number your comment 1 to 6 and answer the questions. Please elaborate as much as you can!

Safety Manual Survey:
1. Have any of your previous jobs handed out safety manuals or covered safety procedures early on in your employment?
2. Would you read a 15 page safety manual given out by your employer?
3. Would you prefer A) more text and fewer pictures and diagrams in a safety manual or B) more pictures and less text in a safety manual? Please explain.
4. Have you ever been injured on the job? Did anyone talk to you later about it being a direct result of a safety violation? Do you think the accident could've been prevented if you knew more about the safety policies?
5. Would you be more likely to read a safety manual if it had pictures that were in color?
6. Is safety important to you and do you think about safety at work when you're about to do something that could be a potential safety hazard? Please explain.

2. Yes, because I'm still anal.
3. More pictures. They usually provide a better illustration of the employers true meaning, and take less time to go over.
4. No.
5. No, because I would read it either way. Might be more interesting in color, though.
6. Heck yeah. Who wants to get hurt?? Better safe than sorry.
Hope that helps your project out.

Yes, I currently work in the Bakery Department at a local Somerfields supermarket. On my first day I had to watch a series of training and safety videos. In the following week, as part of my in-job training, we covered various safety procedures/rules, such as how to safely use Bakery equipment, the stores waste compactors, unload deliveries, as well as what to do in the event of a fire and how to safely fight one if need be. Only after receiving the appropriate training are we allowed to use certain dangerous equipment, and said training must be redone on a yearly basis.
2. Would you read a 15 page safety manual given out by your employer?
Yes. And its quite likely that if one were to be handed out, we would also have to sign a form confirming that we have read and understood it, which would then be put away in our employee files
3. Would you prefer A) more text and fewer pictures and diagrams in a safety manual or B) more pictures and less text in a safety manual? Please explain.
Probably B, as the pictures would help to actually show us what we are and are not meant to do, thus making the manual easier to understand
4. Have you ever been injured on the job? Did anyone talk to you later about it being a direct result of a safety violation? Do you think the accident could've been prevented if you knew more about the safety policies?
No, but I have witnessed an accident that occurred as a result of a safety violation. The accident happened when our former store manger was helping to unload a delivery. As the rear lift on the lorry lowered he was standing too close, and his foot got bashed by on of the metal drop down plates/ramps used to move cages on and off the lift. Luckily he wasnt too badly injured, although he did have to go to hospital to have an X-Ray done. Had he followed the safety procedures for unloading a delivery and stood at least 3 metres away from the back of the lorry until the lift was fully down, and the driver had lowered the metal ramps, then he would not have been injured
5. Would you be more likely to read a safety manual if it had pictures that were in color?
Possibly, although as long as you can easily understand the pictures, it shouldnt make too much difference whether they are in colour or not
6. Is safety important to you and do you think about safety at work when you're about to do something that could be a potential safety hazard? Please explain.
Yes. Seeing I work in the bakery I have to be very safety conscious, mainly when loading and unloading the ovens and using the bread slicing and bread wrapping machines. Any of them could quite easily cause injury if care is not taken when using them, especially seeing that one of our ovens is so large you could actually walk/fall inside of it
Hope this helps. Good luck with your project
